21) Christmas at Daejon Orphanage

After my friend’s mom passed away suddenly in the States two days before Christmas, I offered to take over his orphanage responsibilities. He helped raise money to buy presents for children on our Island. At midnight on Christmas Eve/Christmas he would dress as Santa and drop the presents off then return at 1:00pm on Christmas Day with a group of volunteers to play games with the kids. The presents and our hangout session were to be unrelated, the presents were seen as a random act of kindness and our game day was an additional bonus to the day. He flew out quickly and stayed past the new year, our group of friends raised $420 for him, and he has since returned to the Island.

My original Christmas Eve plan was to attend church with my student from Aewol (mentioned in post 9, post 13, and we have a picture together in post 14) and then relax all Christmas Day; the orphanges plans were far better.

I also attended the Church Christmas Show of my Korean class a week before. I go to a weekly Korean class held by Mormon missionaries with my friend whose mom passed away and another friend of ours.

Our Korean teachers. The class is free and all the teachers are so nice.

I gave one of the little girl’s my phone so she could take pictures all day. I deleted over 50 pictures of the floor, another 50 pictures of a fire alarm and door frame, and countless blurry pictures.

Afterwards a few of us went out to dinner and dessert. We all arrived through EPIK at the same time and went through orientation together.

The best part of my day was returning home and Skyping with my family and boyfriend while opening Christmas presents. Being away for a major holiday has it’s challenges but this made it feel like I barely left home.

Although the reason behind my change of plans was tragic, I am so happy that I was a part of the day.
